Phonics this week

Hello everyone, I hope we are all enjoying our first week of full time!

In phonics this week, we will be focussing on the Phase 2 sounds s,a,t,p,i,n.

We will be learning the pure sounds, (as we discussed at the information session), the letter names, the Jolly Phonics songs and stories. We will also be sorting objects into piles according to what sound the object starts with.

As we learn a new sound each day, we will be seeing if we can blend two or three sounds together to make simple words. By the end of the week using the 6 known sounds your child may be able to blend these words together:

a, as, at, sat, pat, tap, sap, it, is, sit, sat, pit, tip, pip, sip, an, in, nip, pan, pin, tin, tan, tan, nap.

(Remember what we said at the meeting – children develop blending skills in their own time, so don’t panic if your child sounds out ‘s’ ‘i’ ‘t’ but then says “pig!”. This is early stages of beginning to read.)

For the several children who already know these sounds, we will be extending them further by making their phonics sessions more investigative. “How many words can you make with the sounds s,a,t,p,i,n?”

At home you could help by:

Using the Phonics booklet that we sent home and focussing on the s,a,t,p,i,n sounds.

Remember to make it fun, you could write the sounds on large paper and get your child hopping to, jumping on etc etc the sound that you say out loud. The key is, if they think they are playing instead of learning you are more likely to have a fun and stress free session.

Have fun,

The Reception Team
